Job Details
- Position Title: General Tour Guide
- Number of Posts: 7
- Salary: R16,613.95 per month
- Contract Duration: 3 Months
The successful candidates will be responsible for conducting research and crafting compelling narratives that provide visitors with a deep understanding of Robben Island’s history and natural heritage.
Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Tour Preparation:
- Analyse the tour roster and verify the availability of vehicles and drivers.
- Ensure all guiding equipment is in the vehicle.
- Receive and welcome tourists at the harbour.
- Assess tourist needs and arrange necessary accommodations, such as wheelchairs or prams.
Tour Execution:
- Brief tourists on the tour structure, available amenities, and Robben Island’s rules and regulations.
- Conduct engaging tours, highlighting key aspects such as:
- Political history.
- Marine heritage.
- Historical buildings.
- Geographical significance.
- Natural environment.
- Connect global historical events to Robben Island’s context.
- Manage tour stops and ensure smooth transitions.
- Hand over tourists to prison guides after completing the tour.
Research and Development:
- Conduct in-depth research on Robben Island’s history using resources such as newspapers, policies, and videos.
- Participate in discussions, forums, and training sessions to enhance knowledge.
- Collaborate with peers and management to expand and refine tour information.
- Develop and integrate relevant content into the tour experience.
Administrative Duties:
- Perform general administrative tasks related to the role.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications:
- Registered Tour Guide certification.
- Diploma or Degree in Tourism, History, Social Science, or a related field.
- Valid First Aid Certificate.
Experience and Skills:
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
- Fluency in English and at least one other official South African language.
- Understanding of South African and world political history, as well as current events.
- Knowledge of environmental heritage and tourism.
- Fluency in a foreign language will be an advantage.
