Position Overview

- Salary: R155,148 – R182,757 per annum (Salary Level 03)
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A Grade 10 certificate or a school-leaving certificate with a testimonial from the principal.
- Prior involvement with PEYI will be an added advantage.
- Strong communication skills and a focus on customer care.
- Willingness to take responsibility and identify learners’ needs and strengths.
- A commitment to promoting learners’ welfare and fostering an inclusive learning environment.
- Ability to motivate learners and encourage participation in activities.
- Readiness to work with learners with special educational needs.
- An understanding of Public Service principles and learners’ human rights.
- A respectful and supportive attitude toward disabled learners, focusing on their talents and dignity.
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of a Teacher and Class Assistant include providing comprehensive support to both learners and educators in resource classrooms, with a focus on learners facing barriers to learning. Specific responsibilities include:
Classroom and Learner Support
- Assist the Resource Class Educator with classroom organization and management of learners.
- Supervise activities and observe learner performance during lessons.
- Help with administrative tasks and preparation for lessons.
- Support learners in small groups with language development, reading activities, and perceptual skills (e.g., puzzles, motor skills, and posture exercises).
- Facilitate learning using strategies like flashcards, concrete counting activities, and other tools.
Emotional and Physical Care
- Provide emotional support by comforting and reassuring learners.
- Assist learners with physical care, such as wheelchair assistance, clothing neatness, and hygiene.
- Help prepare and serve therapeutic meals, as well as maintain cleanliness in the kitchen area.
Learning Material and Classroom Maintenance
- Assist with the preparation, distribution, and storage of Learner and Teaching Support Material (LTSM).
- Encourage learners to actively participate in maintaining a tidy learning environment.
Extracurricular and General Support
- Accompany learners on excursions and participate in planned activities.
- Invigilate learners before school, during breaks, and in the playground.
- Support life orientation programs and report learner progress to the teacher.
- Participate in fundraising initiatives and other resource-building efforts.
