Purpose of the Position

The goal of this program is to develop a skilled workforce that supports Transnet’s growth and success. Through comprehensive apprenticeship training, learners will acquire the skills needed to contribute to the company’s operations, enhance productivity, and improve profitability.

Responsibilities and Outputs

As a Carpenter Trainee, you will be responsible for:

• Installing machines in workshops.
• Conducting repair and maintenance of buildings and machinery.
• Performing mechanical fault-finding and repairs on electrohydraulic machines and motorized equipment.
• Conducting preventative maintenance (PM) and reporting defects.
• Overhauling, modifying, and upgrading mechanical systems and equipment.

Qualifications and Experience

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Educational Requirements:
  • Grade 11 or 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science at NQF Level 3.
  • Additional Advantage: Engineering Graphics & Design or Civil Technology.
  • OR N2 Qualification with Woodwork/Carpentry Theory, Building Science, Mathematics, and Building Drawing.
• All subjects must be passed with a minimum of 50% or above.

Additional Information

• Eligibility: Applicants must be South African citizens with no existing bursary obligations.
• Age Preference: Preference will be given to South African Youth (under 35 years old).
• Selection Criteria: Academic performance, Employment Equity Plan, and Recruitment Policy.
• Training Location: All training will be conducted at the relevant Transnet Faculty of Engineering Campus.
• Employment After Training: Completion of the apprenticeship does not guarantee permanent employment at Transnet.
